Turkey strikes PKK in Iraq after Ankara attack

After yesterday’s bombing in Ankara, the Turkish military conducted airstrikes in the northern region of neighboring Iraq. According to the Ministry of Defense, a ‘significant number of terrorists’ from the Kurdish separatist movement PKK were ‘neutralized.’ The PKK claimed responsibility for the attack in the Turkish capital, where one terrorist detonated himself, and another was shot dead by the police.

Yesterday morning, Ankara was shaken by a bombing near the Turkish parliament. The Kurdish separatist group PKK claims responsibility for the attack. The PKK stated in a release published by the ANF news agency, which is affiliated with the group, that the action targeted the Turkish Ministry of Interior. According to the statement, the attack was carried out by what the group refers to as its ‘Brigade of Immortals.

Several hours after the attack, the Turkish military conducted airstrikes in the northern region of its neighbouring country, Iraq. The Ministry of Defence announced that ‘a significant number of terrorists were neutralized’ during the operation, citing self-defence as the reason for their action. It’s worth noting that the PKK has its headquarters in the Qandil Mountains in Northern Iraq.

Earlier, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan responded to the attack. He stated in parliament, ‘The villains who aimed to attack the peace and security of our citizens could not achieve their goal and never will.’ Erdogan emphasized his belief that this was ‘the final act of terrorism’ in Turkey.

The attack took place on Sunday morning at around 8:30 AM Belgian time in the Turkish parliamentary district in Ankara, where the political year was set to resume after the summer recess.”

Initially, Turkey reported, ‘One of the terrorists detonated himself, and the other terrorist was neutralized.’ Later in the day, it was confirmed that the second terrorist had also been killed. According to the Ministry of Interior, the police shot him in the head before he could detonate himself. Two officers sustained minor injuries from the explosion’s flames.
